Basics
mizzcherrypie added an entry about learn Korean:

I loooove Korean dramas and they're prompting me to learn the Korean language as a result. Because of the numerous dramas and films that I've seen already, I've been picking up some common and simple Korean phrases like ahn-nyong-ha-se-yo (how are you?) and kwen-chah-nah-yo (it's ok. that's alright). But of course this is not enough for me. It would be great to get more into the language by taking up a formal class but can't find one in Kelowna. Perhaps when I get back to Vancouver I will hunt for some classes and then finally visit a Korean resto.

Not fluent, but I can manage
Charles Starrett added an entry about learn Korean:

I've discovered that language (particularly building vocabulary) is not one of my talents, but I found Korean to be no more difficult to learn than French. (I am a native English speaker.)

The Korean phonetic alphabet (hangul) is a big help in learning. (Hangul was created expressly to increase literacy so it's a very logical and regular writing system.) Most of all, the language is a lot of fun. As with any language, it's easiest to learn in the Mother Country, but if you can't go there, try to find some native speakers who are willing to help.

Oh, learning Korean is also a great excuse for watching Korean dramas! ;-)

Let It Begin
prettyloverboy added an entry about learn Korean:

I started learning Korean recently. I can read the alphabet and pronounce it perfectly, but now I need to start building up my vocabulary. I'll see how I'm doing in a month from now.

Korean
CatWhitehouse added an entry about learn Korean:

I want to learn Korean for many reasons. I love Korean people and Korean culture, and I'm moving there next year. The language itself is beautiful... I often get my Korean friend to just speak to me in Korean, it doesn't matter what he is saying, I just enjoy the sound. I've already begun to learn Korean, working on building up my vocab at the moment. In september I'll begin a one year Korean module at my university which will be helpful in giving me some structure. I'm lucky that I have a few native speaking friends who I meet with regularly which gives me more motivation. But – the grammar scares me!!! :)

Lazyness takes over and i have done nothing over the last few months. I've been hiding from this site and its reminders for me to get off my arse and do some of the stuff on it. Well i'm on a new crest ( of a wave, i'm big into imagery this week).

Still i have started yoga in the mornings and that wakes me up and gives me 2 hours before work to learn some korea. i've been at it for 3 days now, which i admit is that much but its a start.
lets see in a week........

Five years in Korea
gulligull added an entry about learn Korean:

I lived in Korea for five years – two years studying and three years working. I am a blonde haired blue eyed Aussie so I just love running into Korean people in Melbourne and surprising the hell out of them with my prefect Korean accent! I even helped a little lost Korean boy when I visited NY - he was so suprised at the ‘mi-guk-in' speaking Korean that he forgot that he was crying for his mother!

Korean culture is very special. It is all about dream, perfect and love. Although the reality might not be this way, they at least keep persuing and constructing such an environment. Besides, FTTS is my favorite. I am learning Korea to meet Brian someday!

However, i'm totally confused when i visit his website, so i decide to learn Korean. Can anyone here help me to fulfill it?

I'm learing... slowly!
Chocoholic26 added an entry about Learn Korean:

Yay! I've just started learning the Korean alphabet (Hangul). It looks quite hard so I'm gonna have to do heaps of practice...

Oh, and I've finished watching the K-drama, “Full House” (the one with the hottie, Bi!). I love Full House! It has such a sweet ending, unlike many other Korean dramas.

Want to learn before I visit.
WebWench added an entry about learn Korean:

It's nearly impossible that we'll visit Korea anytime
soon, so I have alot of time to improve my vocabulary.
I have what I feel are the most important basics,
like ordering gimbap & ChaJaMyun for instance. :)

annyong hase-yo
zoso28 added an entry about learn Korean:

I dated a girl from Taegu for 3 years and it was inevitable that I would learn korean (han-gul), as she hated speaking in english. Her english was almost perfect, but she preferred I speak in limited Korean. Eventually I just started to pick it up. My advice to you is that you meet some people who speak the language. A personal connection will allow you to learn at an accelerated rate. Ultimately though, the language is very simple and rational in its organization. It was developed over a few years instead of centuries like most languages, so it makes much more sense.

HOW??
o1salena added an entry about learn Korean:

I watch korean dramas, i listen to korean music, all my friends are korean, but I'm not good at korean at all and i can't speak it at all. I speak english, french and mandarin and i really want to learn korean. I know a few phrases and that's all. Where can i learn korean? is there a website to help me? my friends tried to teach me but they can't teach me all day but that's what i want. Anyone help?

ThePhydeaux added an entry about learn Korean:

This was very rewarding... speaking as a natural blonde, most Koreans in country were very surprised that I spoke any Korean at all. Even as a beginner, locals were usually very supportive of my efforts to learn the language. There were a few embarrassing moments (like asking for a to-go box in Korean to a guy who didn't speak Korean), but there were plenty of worthwhile times. I used to sit with some restaurant owners who lived next door, drinking soju and talking about whatever we could think of.

I wouldn't mind going back to Korea to teach English down the road...

Okay so
I_Will added an entry about learn Korean:

I would love to speak to my in-law in her native tongue in order to do this I have to learn Korean. I also want my children to learn korean after all it is a part of who they are. I'll tack learning to make bulgogi and cucumber kimchi to this list. ;-)

Untitled
euterpe3rd added an entry about learn korean:

I am a korean who is not very good at korean. How, you may ask??? I grew up in America and forgot all the korean I knew when I was young because of learning English. But I have decided that I really should learn and that is what I am doing.

Moving along...
Carmen R. Wilson added an entry about Learn Korean:

Well I am leaving for Korea in a little over a month and I had kinda forgotten about this goal. But last night after church my friend Yujin taught me the alphabet...sort of. I have all the letters written down I just have to memorize them. I can write my name in Korean! Still learning!

Untitled
zerokarmaleft added an entry about learn Korean:

At the behest of Leftsider, I've decided to finally mark this off.

1) I can read and write and type the alphabet.
2) I have an elementary-to-intermediate vocabulary (basically an abridged Lonely Planet Phrasebook in my head, though it will be awhile yet before I can live without a dictionary).

I feel that the “learn #{language}” goals encompass first steps. And after first steps comes bigger steps.

Then leaps. And bounds.

I'll let you know where I land.

My recommendation.
leftsider added an entry about Learn Korean:

If you like math or systems, and you'd like to learn a language
If you want a simple asian language, or a simple non-alphabetical language
If you want to visit Korea, or would like a closer communication with Korean communities in your country
If you want to learn more about Korean culture

I highly recommend learning the Korean language. It's not difficult (which is different from easy. heh.), very insightful, and an excellent way to “stretch your brain” a bit.

If you're serious about it, allow me to recommend UCBerkely's “College Korean” (http://www.ucpress.edu/books/sale/pages/5476.html). It focuses on grammar while mixing useful vocabulary and hanja in a systematic format that is useful when studying alone or in a group. It's also occasionally available from Barnes & Noble's.

Good luck to all who are interested. I'm moving on to a new Thing: Master Korean. :)

Getting ready for progress!
sashimiaddict added an entry about learn Korean:

My awesome girlfriend got me, among other things, a Korean textbook for my birthday! She read somewhere that the “Integrated Korean” series was pretty good (the authors are Cho, Lee, Schulz, Sohn, and Sohn and it is part of the Klear Textbooks in Korean Language series put out by the University of Hawai'i Press). Looking it over, it looks quite good!

She also recommended this site to me:
http://rki.kbs.co.kr/learn_korean/lessons/e_index.htm#

My hope is to go through this book in a couple of months (or so) with her help, then move on to the next in the series. It's a slightly daunting task because there are 8 texts to go through, but I'm still very excited about it!

No I can't teach it

I have to put this one on a back burner for a while
nogoodpeacenik added an entry about learn Korean:

I have to put this one on a back burner for a while, at least until I get a better grasp of Japanese and kanji – the study of which is going to consume me for a while, but will hopefully make Korean easier, later...

foxlibrarian added an entry about learn korean:

In the transition between old space and brand new tae kwon do school, we're going to spend some time learnin.

Being a midwesterner, oh man, I don't even have enough vowels to speak english correctly. I'm okay about the in-between consonants, though.

It's very neat. Will help me get a job when I learn it.

Waiting for Soo Jin
jooyoung added an entry about learn Korean:

I am currently waiting for my korean teacher to get back from Seoul, when she gets back I am down to start private lessons, I really need to learn.

Second, I am going to start attending korean church.

Third, I am going to get the KTV through comcast.

I work in a Korean company, so every day I see and hear how nice this language is. I wish I could speak Korean. Not only the language is interesting, their culture also looks nice I think. It's just cool :)

Setting a goal
sashimiaddict added an entry about learn Korean:

My girlfriend is Korean and I really want to learn the language in honor of her and her culture. Plus, it's a cool sounding language! I love the way it just rolls off the tongue.

Next week I'm going to be visiting collaborators in eastern Washington state. There really isn't a whole lot to do out there (it's quite remote), so I think I'm going to make it a definite plan to learn the script and be comfortable with it by the end of next week.

I watch Korean drama and listen to Korean music. There's no good excuse for my not learning to speak the language.

The alphabet is a breeze
ChristopherDundy added an entry about learn Korean:

Nothing could be simpler than learning to read Korean. It'll take you 90 minutes or less to learn the letters with a teacher, and maybe a little longer (though not much) if you are bumping around on your own. But it is quite a thrill when you can finally decipher something in an entirely different alphabet.

Speaking is also a blast because you are interacting with the locals on their turf. And though I am by no means fluent, I can get around in most situations. This a reasonably easy language to learn, so give it a try, if only just to keep the old mental juices flowing.
